Devil is in the details

I was aware about certain unwritten rules when writing a letter for a customer as those which say to keep a respectful tone, be clear with the message, who are you, why is the purpose of the letter... but it have never crossed my mind that there could be a "rule" related with the initial greeting and the way you sign it off. It's something that my manager has noticed me today while we were reviewing a letter I had drafted for customers.

The "rule" says:

If you start the letter with Dear Mr. X, you should sign off "Yours sincerely". However if you start Dear Sir/Madam or Dear Customer, you should sign off "Yours Faithfully".

I don't really know which the reason for this is but as they've said... Old School Lessons!
